Trekking in the Sahara Desert – Camel Trekking and Hiking in the Merzouga Desert 10 Days

During this Morocco trekking tour, you will delve into the heart of the deepest Moroccan desert in the center of spectacular Saharan landscapes: the blazing dunes will replace the blue-black mountains of the Zireg circus, for an extraordinary Morocco desert walk. From the enormous dunes of Merzouga, this breathtaking journey through the Zireg desert takes place in one of the most desolate places of southern Morocco. The Erg Chebbi dunes, where we shall meet our nomadic camel drivers, will be followed by our wadis camels Ziz and Rheris.

Our trek will next take us past the hamada of Guir to Zireg, one of the most Saharan locations of southern Morocco, to a gigantic desert circus shale blue-black covered in orange sand.

Highlights :
  • Meet the nomads of Ait Khebbach, a powerful warrior oasis tribe that once traded across the Sahara between Africa and the Maghreb.
  • Enjoy a spectacular desert hike in the Zireg, which is located in one of the most remote areas of southern Morocco.
  • Discover an extraordinary color palette: bluish black mountains, regs, huge circuses, arid wadis, sanded hills, and plateaus surrounded by flamboyant dunes.
  • Discover the thousand Kasbahs in the Dades and Todra valleys.
  • Under the skies, experience Moroccan desert nights.
  • While driving to Desert, take in the breathtaking scenery of the high Atlas.

Day 2

Marrakech - South Moroccan & The Palmeraie De Tinghir

Departure to the south of Morocco via the Tizi N'Tichka pass (2260m) to Ouarzazate, where we will stop for a picnic. Then we'll take the road of 1000 Kasbahs through Skoura's palm grove and the Dades Valley to Tinghir's palm grove and the Todra Gorge. Dinner and an overnight stay in a hostel.

350km / 6 hours drive - stay in a hostel.

Day 3

Tinghir - The Oasis Of Merzouga

This morning, we pass the palm of Tafilalet to enter the oasis of Merzouga, a key crossing point for slave caravans and Sudanese and Guinean gold commerce, but also a meeting and exchange location for Arabs, Berbers, and Africans.

Getting to know our camel Mans. We set out from Erg Chebbi, loaded dromedaries in tow. The most stunning dunes in Morocco have been modeled here by the Harmattan "desert wind" that sweeps the Sahara. The crimson tint of its sand is evocative of Namibia's spectacular Soslusvei dunes. Picnic. Camp in the sand dunes.

150 miles / 2:30 hours of driving / 4 hours of walking / camping

Day 4

Merzouga - The Dunes Of Erg Chebbi

Beautiful immersion in this amazing dune massif, where we sail in sand waves, sometimes through corridors between the towering dunes, sometimes along erg ridges. The picnic comes to a halt by a well, where we can meet nomads who have come to water their livestock. We cross a path in the afternoon to get at the stunning Erg Znigui dunes. Camp.
Walking for 6 hours - Camp

Day 5

Erg Chebbi Dunes - The Dunes Of Douifa

We begin our journey on a stony terrain. Then we'll cross the ouad Ziz to get to the Douifaa dunes, which are attached to the foot of the bagel Originate. Camp.

Walking for 6 hours - Camp

Day 6

Dunes of Douifa - The Djebel Ougnate

Our journey continues down the djbel Ougnate at the sluggish pace of camels, amid sandstone peaks and massive dunes. During our trip, we will come across rock engravings that attest to human presence in this area during the time of a vast savannah. Camp among the sand dunes.

Camp after 6 hours of walking.

Day 7

The Djebel Ougnate - The Dunes Of Ouzina

We cross the highlands by a cape-shaped peak, a sentinel rock bounded in the west by Wadi Rheris and in the east by Wadi Ziz, which flows along the Hamada du Guir. These two wadis feed Morocco's largest oasis, the Tafilalet, which contains over a million palm palms. You will pass over stony terrain, black shales, marble outcrops, and significant dunes. Camp in the stunning Ouzina dunes.

Camp after 6 hours of walking.

Day 8

Ouzina Dunes - The Dunes Of Remlia

We leave the dunes and head towards the last Saharan village before crossing the Guir hamada. It has long been inhabited by the Berber tribes Ait Atta and Gnaoua, descendants of former Sudanese slaves from Saadian times. Our journey continues across the Wadi Rheris, whose winter floods fertilize the alluvial plain cultivated by the nomadic tribes Ait Khebbach. It is possible to meet nomads. Our camp will be set up in the dunes opposite Remlia's terracotta dwellings.

Camp after 6 hours of walking.

Day 9

Remlia – Marrakech

After breakfast, we'll drive from Ramlia to Marrakech, passing via the Todra Valley, Gogres Dades, and Rose Valley. Visit the Kasbah Ben Haddou Ouarzazate before continuing to Marrakech over the tichka's neck. Arrival and installation at your Marrakech hotel.
